On running in heat

Ohio weather has been very iffy this Spring. It’s been slow to warm up (but let’s be honest, the 50-60 degree weather has been great for running!) and has rained buckets. The 10 days before vacation had rain everyday.

Houston weather? 90 degrees (or more) and no rain for 2+ months. Both Saturday and Sunday I went out around 8:30-9 am and it was 80 and increasing steadily. Saturday I started great. The first two miles were an 8:45 pace. I was flying along. Two miles chimed on my Garmin and I was DONE. I jogged back at a 10 min pace for 3.6 total (but I walked something like 0.25 miles).

Now, no insults to interval runners, but I don’t walk on long runs unless its thru a water station (and I can barely walk and drink without choking lol). So walking to me feels like failure. Being out of shape. No conditioning. And heat and higher than normal heart rate be damned.

I read something later that day about needing 10 hours of training to adapt to warmer climates. Oh. Really. Wish I would have read that sooner.

Sunday I did 1.6 mile loops (10min pace) and stopped for water in between. Sure, 5 minute breaks sounds awful, but I did a total of 5 miles with two breaks in the middle and didn’t feel like I was going to die after. Next time, admit you’re human and GTF over it, Kelly.

Warrior Dash this Saturday! Oh, and did I mention it will be 90 in Ohio this weekend? Oh boy.

Success!

Friday - travel day. Food, beer, pizza. Awesome day!

Saturday - rough 3.6 mile run. Details to follow. Summary: Transitioning from Ohio’s 70 degrees F to Texas’s 90 degrees was a shock. Beach day and sunburn!

Sunday - awesome 5 mile run. Brewed beer and went to Kemah boardwalk.

Monday - goof off morning and travel day.

PS Boy does travel make people irritable. One more flight to home.

In my head, I'm still 25 pounds heavier

When I lay on my side, it feels like my belly is huge. Trying on bikinis made me feel like my love handles were spilling out all over the place.

It’s not and they weren’t. Get over it, Kelly.

Traveling

We’re traveling this Friday to visit friends I don’t know well. It’s just them and us, so I’m stressed about the travel, stressed they won’t like or understand me, and stressed because its a 4 day weekend for me and I’m not home to get shit done.

Lower back (nerve) pain. Low tolerance. No patience. Easily stressed. Blood pressure jumps at one small irritant. Can’t wait to leave.

Workouts

6.61 mile run yesterday (easy pace in 1:09). Sore and tired did not a fun run make.

Insanity Pure Cardio tonight. Always a fun one.

24 miles on a bike

Lots of breaks, including a snack break and an ice cream break. Yum. We were out about four hours and bikes for about three of them. Some days its just nice to spend time with friends.

Short slow bike ride or long hard run.

My money is on the bike ride but my heart is set on the run.

Three miles early this morning. Good on food. First week at 1700-1800 calories sucked. Hard. #majorattitudeproblem

It's Sunny!

It’s (partly) sunny here and it isn’t raining (yet). Tomorrow and Saturday look promising. Seriously, the radio DJs were joking about building an ark. This is week 3 of 5-6 days of rain per week.

Ran 3.1 miles last night in between rain clouds. 25:36. One of these days I’ll run a sub-25 minute 5k. Just maybe not 3 days after a half marathon.

Recovery run, you say? I did try. My legs wanted to goooooo!

Followed it up with half of Chest & Back and an hour of tiling the master shower.

Workouts

My BF and I did P90X Cardio X last night. I still hurt pretty bad from my half on Sunday (I’m lookin’ at you, quads!) but I’m surprised at how easy it is compared to a year ago.

After Insanity and running my butt off for 6 months, Cardio X just doesn’t cut it as a tough workout anymore. Hooray for improvement, at least!

First Post!

I’ve been following Tumblr blog’s for awhile and finally decided to jump on the bandwagon.

I’ve been posting on SparkPeople (ethniu02) while using their food and exercise trackers but its a terrible format. I’ve lost 20 lbs in the last 12 months and I’m trying to lose another 10-15. I’m at my lowest adult weight now but would like to finally wear cute tank tops and an actual bikini.

P.S. Someone at work just dropped 3 mini York Peppermint Patties on my desk. Now you know my favorite treat, too. Gee thanks!
